I finally got around to painting a Bones model, and it’s also my first attempt to use a Non-Metallic Metals technique. The model is Fulumbar, Dwarf Warrior by Reaper.
I didn’t use a primer, I followed Reaper’s recommendation and painted straight onto the plastic. I started with:
- P3 Thornwood Green for the leather areas
- P3 Bastion Grey for the metals
- P3 Menoth White Base for the cloak
- GW Ungor Flesh for the face
- GW Blood Red for the hair
At this point I started painting the metal parts. I started with a 1:1 GW Caledor Blue with P3 Bastion Gray. I shaded each surface a little bit, then mixed in a little white and shaded the next part. The uppermost part of each surface should be the lightest. I wanted the rune on the hammer to stand out a little bit (even though it shouldn’t be lit well) and so for it I went almost all the way to white for the center parts of it.
The mug on the shield was painted a 2:1 mix of GW Caledor Sky and P3 Bastion Gray.
The foam was painted GW Flash Gitz Yellow, and then gradually washed out by adding P3 Menoth White Base until it was the right cream color.
The horns on the helmet were painted with GW Bleached Bone, thicker at the tips and thinner at the base.
I coated the leather armor sections with GW Tallern Sand.
The leather armor bits on the skirt were then washed with GW Baal Red, and then shaded with GW Devlan Mud.
The horns were given several shadings of GW Gryphonne Sepia and GW Devlan Mud. The hammer’s handle was given a coat of GW Bleached bone, and then washed with GW Ogryn Flesh. At this point I also drybrushed the gloves with GW Snakebite Leather, and then gave it a wash of GW Devlan Mud. I also went back and painted the fur around the boots the same way as the cloak.
At this point I had been procrastination on the boots, I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do with them. I decided to go with the same bluish metal look as the hammer and shield. One of the nice things about using a wet palette is that your paints stay nice and wet for quite a long time. This is especially important if you’re a slow painter like me!
For the eyes, I painted the entire socket GW Bleached Bone, and then carefully painted the pupils with GW Caledor Sky. The areas surrounding the eyes were re-painted with GW Ungor Flesh and washed with GW Ogryn Flesh. The recessed areas on the base were darkened with GW Devlan Mud. The raised areas of the hammer’s handle were lightened with a thinned down BW Bleached Bone.
Some of the pictures are lacking, and it’s a combination of
- Poor lighting
- Phone camera
- Poor photographer
The camera and photography experience aren’t as easy to improve, but for my next project I’ve built a simple lightbox. Quick write-up with a few pictures to come.
